Frances Mackey
I’ve been a studio potter since the 1960s, working in cities including New York, Denver, Ann Arbor, and New Jersey before settling back in Denver in 2006. Over the years, I’ve worked with both stoneware and porcelain, primarily high-fired in a gas kiln. I enjoy both wheel throwing and hand-building techniques to create functional pieces such as tableware, planters, vases, and serving dishes.
One unique part of my work includes small ceramic houses, which began as an assignment during a sculpture workshop to create something that evokes memory. These pieces connect to my personal history, my father was a carpenter who built houses, and these small forms honor that legacy.
While living in New Jersey, I served as the ceramics instructor at Rutgers Prep School. After retiring, I returned to Denver and converted my large garage into a home studio. It’s become my perfect creative space and truly, my happy place.
BFA, Maryland Institute of Art.
